Wappenshall in Telford

Wappenshall in Telford

When I started this blog, my goal was to share places of Telford that I find interesting and quirky. A place for a walk, an explore or just a plain old nosy. As the site has grown it has evolved somewhat. Readers are sending ME places of curiosity. Places that have been off my radar despite my 40+ years of traipsing around our town, which is extremely satisfying 🤗

Today we ventured to a fascinating place. Not yet opened up enough for a full walk but one day there is a dream that you will travel all the way to Shrewsbury from here on your Shanksy's Ponies

We had an invitation to visit but this merry band of volunteers are very keen to add to their numbers. You can join for £10 a year, you can turn up to a working party and lend a hand or you could invite yourself for a mini tour with a kindly worker like we did (thanks to the lovely Phil) 🤣
Places like these astound me. The sheer passion of people who give their time freely and willingly to turn around places that have been forgotten and abandoned.

Wappenshall is most definitely in Telford. Just up the road from Apley in fact. In its past life the canal thrived, an important hub for 30+ boats a day loading and unloading their precious cargo. Sadly they were gradually filled in and left to become overgrown wastelands. But not any more! Thanks to tireless efforts and successful grants these places are being brought back to life. It is envisaged in as little as 4 years the boats will be returned along with a visitor centre and possibly a tea room. Dream big, achieve big!

With our help we can ease the way by voting for them for some further funding so if you can, get clicking on the link!

I urge you to visit this place so that you can see the transformation in the years to come. It is locked up so make sure you check when its open. The bridge alone is a work of art. It was built around a bend so was called a skew bridge. I reckon that's where skewiff and askew came from but that's just my musings.....
